“This series of magazine editions was produced during the 1990s and 2000s by Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. Under the influential directorship of Christoph Tannert, Bethanien, with its exhibitions and international residency program, became an important gathering place and clearing house for contemporary artists of many nationalities who passed through Berlin and was a kind of laboratory of 1990s critical art practices. The magazines provide an interesting snapshot into the local actors and key debates that took place in that particular milieu.” (Former West)
From 2005 to 2008, I was in charge of the thematic part of this magazine centred on the artists in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien’s residency program. I was responsible for choosing the editorial themes, writing the keynote essays, conducting interviews with artists and curators (Inke Arns, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Thomas Bayrle), commissioning texts from international writers and critics, and liaising with the graphic designer. I also translated various artists’ portraits from German to English or vice versa.
